Blackwork tattoos in Salem.

Black ink only, and the whole design built out of how much of it goes where. No color to lean on, which is why it either works or it does not.

What this actually means.

Blackwork covers everything from solid fields of black to fine dotwork, and what holds it together is contrast rather than palette. A piece is read by what has been left bare as much as by what has been filled, so the design and the placement get decided together rather than one after the other.

It ages well for the same reason it is hard to do. Solid black holds its edge far longer than a light wash does, and a piece built on contrast still reads at arm's length in ten years. That is also why the drawing stage matters: once a large black area is in, it is in.

Nothing is pulled off a wall of repeats unless you have chosen a piece of flash on purpose. The design is drawn for you and for the placement you picked, by the artist who is going to tattoo it.

Asked about blackwork tattooing.

What kind of tattoos does Tomb Gallery do?
Dark art, blackwork and horror. That is what the shop is built around and what every artist here is strongest at. If what you want sits a long way outside that, we will tell you honestly and point you somewhere better.
How far ahead do I need to book?
It depends on the artist and on how big the piece is. Small work can sometimes happen quickly. A large piece needs drawing time before anyone picks up a machine, so start the conversation earlier than you think you need to.
Can I bring my own design?
Bring the idea and bring references. What you will not get is a traced copy of another tattooist's work, because that is someone else's drawing. Your artist will take what you are after and draw it for you and for the placement you picked.
